Welcome to the Department of Chemistry
A separate Chemistry Section was established in 1951 in the then University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT) to teach Chemistry Courses to the technology students and do research in Chemistry. Over the last 65 years the Chemistry Section grew into current Department of Chemistry. Right from the inception the faculty members in the Department have been guiding students for Ph.D. and so far more than 225 students have obtained their Ph.D. degrees and the faculty members have published more than 700 research publications.
The Department has current faculty strength of 2 Professors, 3 Associate Professors, 5 Assistant Professors, 1 FRP (UGC) Assistant Professor, and few Scientists working under prestigious national fellowships like, DST INSPIRE, Ramanujan Fellow. The faculty members have received many prestigious awards and are contributing to important national programmes like, Chemistry Olympiad, NIUS, and Professional Bodies. They are offering consultancy to Industry.
The Department shoulders the responsibility of teaching Chemistry courses to Chemical Technology, Chemical Engineering and Pharmacy students of the Institute. In 2010 the Department started a new post B.Sc. four semesters M.Sc. (Chemistry) Programme, with an intake of 20. The programme is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK). The Department also coordinate the M.Tech. programme in Green Technology.
Thre are more than 65 students pursuing Ph.D. in the Department. The major research interests of the faculty are Homogeneous and Heterogeneous catalysis, Organic synthesis, Organometallics, Electrochemistry.
The Department has been recognized by the UGC under SAP DRS II programme. The Department is receiving funding through the prestigeous FIST programme of the DST.
The Department has many sophisticated analytical instruments - GCs, HPLC, UV-Vis, FT-IR, Digital Polarimeter, Haake Viscometer, Microwave Digester, Cyclic Voltameter, XRD, SEM.
